As a trained specialist in teaching English as a Foreign Language, you will get the chance to travel, encounter wonderful cultures and new experiences, whilst helping people to learn the language and skills for effective communication. This course has been designed so that you can study English language or literature while specialising in English language teaching. The emphasis is very much on books written in recent years, or on the language of the 21st Century. Even our Shakespeare option is based on modern films and theatre performances of his plays: how we interpret his works today. In the Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) part of the course you will learn the various methods and techniques applied in language teaching and the theories which underlie them, while also gaining practical experience of teaching. The English part of the course will give you insights into how language works, how we make choices when speaking and writing and how other people are speak and write. Successful completion of this course gives you immediate experience of language teaching and a qualification that you can use around the world to find positions as an English language teacher.

If you do decide to go into Teaching English as a Foreign Language as a career, successful completion of this course will give you the opportunity to start applying immediately for posts in language schools both here and abroad. After some full-time teaching experience, you can go on to take the higher level Diploma (DELTA) or even an MA course in English Language Teaching.
