Registered Nurse - Operating Room Perioperative Nursing

Course Description

This program prepares Registered Nurses to function as competent team members in the perioperative operating room. It offers unique clinical experience on a full-time basis. The program is organized in two phases. Phase I consists of 6 weeks (180 hours) of in-class and online theory delivery, including: current ORNAC standards, principles and application surgical anatomy intensive study of surgical interventions and surgical technologies, including indications and complications role of the circulating nurse role of the scrub nurse clinical lab work days Phase II includes 320 hours of clinical exposure. This requires clinical placement for 12 weeks at a minimum of three days per week. This is done concurrently with the Theory course starting at week 5. (Test 1 must be passed in order to enter the Phase II Clinical.) Clinical lab skills are preceptored at the clinical hospital if applicable. Students are exposed to several services (e.g., General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Plastics, ENT and orthopaedics). The program is delivered online via Elluminate, with weekly discussions and assignments posted through the College WebCT/Blackboard. A reflective clinical essay is required at the end of the course. Clinical experiences are scheduled in the hospital operating room in which you are working.

Career outcomes

Students who complete the Post-R.N. certificate program are eligible to submit the Course Curriculum Outline from the year the program was taken. Transfer credit will be reviewed by the Sally Horsfall Eaton School of Nursing and once granted can be applied toward the Post-R.N., B.Sc.N. program at Ryerson University.
