Dietetics has been a recognised health service career for many years and the School has been a recognised training centre for dietitians for over 65 years. The programme aims to apply previous academic knowledge in psychology, biochemistry and other related subjects to the clinical setting and integrate this with nutrition and dietetics. The holistic nature of client care is reflected in the behavioral science elements of the programme, which allows eligibility to apply for HPC (Health Professions Council) Registration in Dietetics. We do not expect all our applicants to have visited a dietetic department but if you are fortunate enough to have experience of speaking with a dietitian or visiting a dietetic team, then it is appropriate to include this in your personal statement. Some lecture classes will be taught in conjunction with undergraduate students and Master's students and the programme is supported by external specialists from nutrition and dietetics. An expansion of interest in food in relation to health, alongside the changing nature of the National Health Service, has extended the boundaries of dietetics to include a wide range of professional opportunities. Graduate employment rates in dietetics are high, with jobs located throughout the UK and further afield. Employment can either be found in a clinical setting, usually within the NHS, or in NHS community practices. Dieticians also find employment in many other related fields including research, the food industry, consultancy and private practice, social services, media, health education and health promotion. To comply with HPC registration requirements, students must complete three clinical placements, which must be undertaken in approved hospital and/or community departments throughout the UK to be eligible for application.

An expansion of interest in food in relation to health, alongside the changing nature of the NHS, has extended the boundaries of dietetics to include a wide range of professional opportunities. However, the majority of graduates from the programme will initially be employed as NHS hospital-based dietitians. Current employment rates are good with most graduates who are prepared to work throughout the UK being employed within six months of graduation.
