Course Description

The English Department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, has extensive course offerings, for both majors and non-majors, to expose students to a rich and diverse body of artistic and cultural material. Most faculty teach their courses using a combination of lecture and discussion format which invites enriching personal engagement and at the same time provides the fundamental structure of scholarly-critical guidance and learning. English courses are offered on literary periods and genres, rhetoric and composition, creative writing, and methodology. Four English majors are offered for undergraduate programs, including English Literature, Creative Writing English, English Pre-Theology and English Pre-Law. Students may also be interested in pursuing an English degree through the Honors Tutorial College.

Career outcomes

Having honed their ability to grasp complexity, communicate clearly, understand multiple contexts, and provide synthetic answers, graduates of the English – Literature & Writing program are prepared to pursue a wide variety of careers. Many graduates go on to pursue graduate programs, including M.A. or Ph.D. programs in English Literature & Language, master’s programs in Information Science or Education, and law or business school. Others work in publishing, web content development, corporate communications, grant-writing and community organizing, advertising, or personnel management. As importantly, the well-rounded education that OHIO requires of its English students can help ensure that they are ready for the unexpected challenges of a rapidly changing job market.
