Course Description

This is a diverse industry where qualified workers assist in the design, production and maintenance of plants, gardens and landscapes for both local and international markets. Qualified students are also in demand in fruit orchards and vineyards. Gain hands-on experience within our unrivalled practical horticultural facilities including the campus nursery, modern glasshouses, hydroponics unit and ten hectare crop production facility. Extensive work experience is built into this programme enabling you to develop technical skills and establish industry contacts. *Students studying the online option from our Dunedin campus (domestic students only) will be supported by a weekly face-to-face tutorial and will have to attend the two, one-week block courses at the Central Otago campus. Support for online learning is available from both campuses. The two year programme pathway offers a longer term study option by giving you the chance to complete the National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) during your first year of study and then the Diploma in Horticulture (Level 5) in your second year. The National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) is an industry-standard qualification covering the fundamental skills and knowledge required of horticulturists in orchards, vineyards, nurseries or any other major commercial operation.
