Course Description

Do you love literature? Do you want to write for a living, or inspire others by teaching? Ranked as one of the UK’s top 10 English courses for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2014, Southampton Solent University’s BA (Hons) English programme can help to focus your talents and turn them into marketable skills. You will explore a range of literary texts, discussing the current and historical relevance of literature in our society today. The course also features units that cover employability skills. These include professional practice, writing for a living and entrepreneurship. Additionally, students benefit from a choice of optional units, allowing for specialisation into specific areas of literature. This course aims to teach transferable skills that are relevant to a number of professions including teaching, professional writing, publishing, public relations and librarianship. Our BA (Hons) English students ranked us in the top ten universities for overall student satisfaction – National Student Survey 2014.* Past students have enjoyed a range of off-campus trips. These have included visits to areas of special literary interest and workplace tours. Students are given the option to learn a foreign language and/or study abroad for a year. Employability skills and practical work experience are an integral part of the course. Students are given the opportunity to pitch for work with Solent’s in-house creative agencies.
