Course Details

Master of Anthropology

Course Description

Anthropology is a social science committed to the comparative and historical study of humankind. Anthropology literally means the study of humanity and considers human biological and cultural variation. The UAB Anthropology Department offers an MA in cooperation with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Alabama (UA) at Tuscaloosa. Courses are offered in all four of the traditional sub-fields of anthropology: cultural, biological, archaeology, and linguistics. In recent years the department at UAB has begun to develop a topical focus on the anthropology of peace, justice, human rights, and ecology. This new focus parallels the establishment in 2014 of the Institute for Human Rights and is also reflected in UAB hosting the Peaceful Societies website. As the focus is further developed at UAB, we anticipate that some but not all MA students will decide to pursue studies in these areas.
