Master of Professional Studies (MProfStuds) - Mathematics Education

Course Description

The Mathematics Education specialty within the Master of Professional Studies degree is designed for mathematics teachers who wish to study and research their classroom practice. It is a one-year course (but may be taken part-time over 2 years). The degree brings together research, mathematical knowledge and professional experience to develop critical approaches to mathematics teaching and learning. The specialisation is jointly offered by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education. The degree has three components (that can be taken in any order): One mathematics education paper offered by the Faculty of Education; One paper from the 700-level schedules of the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering Science. This can be either a 700-level content paper in mathematics, statistics or engineering science, or a mathematics education research paper offered by staff of the Mathematics Education Unit 90 points research portfolio. Students will research work related to their mathematics teaching practice.

Career outcomes

Graduates of this programme will be better able to be senior practitioners in mathematics education at primary, secondary or tertiary level, and to take on positions of responsibility that involve mentoring other teaching staff. In particular, it is expected that graduates of the MProfStuds (Mathematics Education) will be suited for Lead Teacher or HOD Mathematics roles in secondary schools. This degree may provide the foundation for PhD study.
