Course Description

The Department of Music has well-documented history of helping aspiring musicians achieve success in a wide range of endeavours. Our graduates have gone on to become established recording artists, symphony members and conductors, and renowned teachers around the world. With an array of theatres, practice rooms and the latest digital recording and performance equipment, our students benefit from first-class facilities and instruction from our many distinguished professors. The Department of Music offers the study of performance, composition, music theory, history and literature, and both elementary and secondary music education. Students develop advanced skills with applied study in piano, voice, brass, winds, strings or percussion. An overall understanding of the history of music provides students with a rich perspective into the music, the composers’ lives and their contributions to musical traditions, styles, genres and forms of composition. The Department of Music at the University of Saskatchewan offers courses for those who desire a major in music as well as elective courses in music. Access to music courses requires prerequisites as listed or permission of the Department. Concerts and Recitals On the campus many concerts and recitals are presented each year by outstanding artists. A valuable adjunct to any student's education is the opportunity to attend the guest artist series and any departmental ensemble and student recitals. Note that the series involves a fee for tickets. Many significant concerts and recitals are also available in the community. Standards of Academic Performance It is the expectation of the Department of Music that students attend all rehearsals, recitals, and applied lessons as scheduled. Class attendance policy as established by the University is also to be followed.
