Graduate Certificate in Sociology

Course Description

Sociology is the study of human relationships and more generally the study of society. It lies at the heart of Social Studies. Sociologists challenge what is normally taken for granted, and ask important questions about who we are as people and how we fit into the world around us: What do different social groups perceive social reality to be and how does every come to know it? How and what do people learn from their parents, peers, elders, teachers, television and the internet? Why does conflict occur in some societies? Who decides what behaviour is acceptable and what is not? How can we best explain the way societies change? If you study Sociology you will discuss these issues by focusing on particular themes such as crime, the family, popular culture, poverty, research methods, the media, work and globalisation. If you are looking to quickly acquire new skills for a new career, a graduate certificate is a great option for you. Graduate certificates are intended to develop your knowledge and skills in a subject area that is different to your first degree's major. You may be eligible if you haven't studied for a degree before if you can demonstrate an interest in the subject area and a satisfactory academic ability. By choosing to study a graduate certificate you can quickly develop career competency in a single subject area. A graduate certificate is a shorter version of a graduate diploma, is studied at undergraduate level, and can be completed in the equivalent of one semester of full-time study. Candidates must gain 60 points at 100 level or above, including at least 40 points at 300 level or above, in the Graduate Certificate subjects.
