BA (Hons) Professional Welsh with TESOL

Course Description

All Professional Studies Major modules are taught in Welsh with modules from your Minor subject taught in English. ‘Cymraeg Proffesiynol A’ looks at how the language is used today in a specific career. You will be able to extend your interests and enhance your communication skills, as well as work experience in the third year. You will also be prepared for the workplace, producing diverse material as CV, covering letter and diary. ‘Cymraeg Proffesiynol B’ extends your professional skills in Welsh. In addition to reading, discussing and analyzing a wide range of professional written texts, students will be writing tasks, where there is an opportunity to develop their creative skills. Students are expected to draw up letters, articles and reports. Students will also expand their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary of the language through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and exercises. In Translation modules cover the history and background of translation in Wales, so that students understand the context. Psychological, social and legal arguments in favour and against translation in Wales today are covered, and students will have the opportunity to weigh these arguments through oral and written tasks. By completing a series of assignments in class, individually and in groups, such as homework and an exam at the end of the year, there will be an opportunity for students to identify good practice in translation. In the Creative Writing modules, students will discuss different authors sometimes focusing on aspects such as storytelling, portraiture, and describes the basic forms of poetry. Different techniques are used to encourage students to write and produce works independently, and to be critical when considering their own work and analysis work of other authors. In addition, you will study the following modules: Year One * Language Awareness Grammar * Langugae Awareness Lexis and Phonology Year Two * Introduction to TESOL * Observation and Peer Teaching Year Three * Developing the TESOL Professional * Teaching Experience

Career outcomes

You will maximise your chances of getting a job if you take the opportunity to go on work experience by following the ‘Cymraeg Proffesiynol A’ module in the third year. You can go to a workplace using Welsh or bilingually to see how to use it professionally, and make connections with employers. This course provides a solid base to develop written and oral skills in Welsh and English. You may want to be a primary or secondary school teacher (after completing one year of teacher training) or be a tutor. You could go to abroad to teach English and learn skills that you can transfer to any job. The increasing demand for professionals who can communicate effectively in Welsh and English, and will serve you well in finding a job.
