Course Description

Features of the Biomedical Sciences course include: * studies in the biology of disease * a range of modules to suit your subject interests * placements in NHS hospital labs * research projects using state-of-the-art equipment * approved by the Health Professions Council (www.hpc-uk.org) and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (www.ibms.org) * can be used to support an application for mature entry to medical school The Applied Biomedical Science (Clinical) degree consists of a programme of integrated education and training including a year's placement in an accredited NHS training laboratory. Those graduating with honours are eligible to apply to the HPC for registration as a Biomedical Scientist and are entitled to claim Licentiate Membership of the Institute. You will initially enroll on the BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science degree in Year 1 and study modern molecular and cell biology together with experimental design and data handling. During your second year you will be interviewed for placement in an accredited NHS training lab. Those students who are successful will transfer onto the Applied Biomedical Science (Clinical) degree.

Career outcomes

As a science graduate you will find many career choices open to you. Some 70 per cent of our graduates follow careers in biomedical sciences, in particular, research and development work in the pharmaceutical, and health care sectors. You will be well placed, after prescribed training and qualification, to pursue a career within the NHS as an HPC registered Biomedical Scientist. This is a graduate profession, offering an interesting and varied career both in the UK and overseas. Applicants aiming for a career in the NHS as a registered Biomedical Scientist must be able to communicate in English to the standard equivalent of Level 7 for the International Language Testing System, with no element below 6.5 by the end of the degree. Some graduates have used the BSc(Hons) Biomedical Sciences degree to support their applications for mature entry to medicine degrees. Many graduates choose further study, including MPhil/PhD research degrees or taught Master's courses. In addition to laboratory-based jobs, you may be engaged in management, marketing or other support areas. Some will use their science degree to follow careers in business, the media, law or the public sector. Whatever career you choose your degree will help you to make an important contribution to both the health and wealth of the community.
