Course Description

Environmental science is the study of the interaction between living and non-living elements of the environment, and how humans impact on these elements. Environmental scientists use a multi-disciplinary knowledge base to assess, research, and manage a wide range of environmental issues. They explore, discover and apply new ideas about the environment to provide solutions to environmental problems that are becoming increasingly apparent worldwide. Information is provided to society by establishing policies for resource management and environmental protection. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills in Australia is becoming a fast-growing area creating new and increased job prospects. There is a forecasted growth of 14.4% in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Services Industry and with this brings exciting employment opportunities and career options. The projected high rate of employment growth for 2015 to 2019 reflects ongoing strength and demand for the services of qualified and highly educated workers. Source: Employment Projections This degree: The Bachelor of Science (Environment) focuses on Earth and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Chemistry, and is ideal if you would like to complete a science-based environmental degree with a view to employment in an area of environmental monitoring and management. The superb local marine life, coastal landscapes, nearby rainforest escarpment, and fresh-water and terrestrial ecosystems means Wollongong is ideally located for environmental science studies. You will be exposed first-hand to a wide range of urban, rural and ecological issues. You will graduate with real-world experience and be ready for a career in government, educational and research organisations, private industry, and consultancies. You may apply to transfer to the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) at the end of the first year, subject to satisfactory performance and the approval of the Course Coordinator and the Sub Dean. What you will study: You will study a range of core subjects to gain knowledge and develop practical skills across the following areas: Environmental Sciences Physical Geography Biological Sciences Geospatial Analysis Environmental Physics Analytical and Environmental Chemistry. In year three, the degree offers flexibility to choose several electives tailored to your interests. A capstone subject will serve as a culminating achievement of your degree experience, assisting you to integrate, consolidate and extend acquired knowledge and skills as you work to solve a challenging project. On completion, high performing students considering further study or a career in research are encouraged to consider the Bachelor of Science (Honours) program. This one year degree offers a pathway to expanding their knowledge in environmental science and achieving research-orientated aspirations.
