Course Description

What is Autism Spectrum Disorders ? The purpose of the ASD graduate certificate plan of study program is to support students in: (1) understanding the characteristics of ASD, (2) locating and linking evidence based instructional practices (e.g., structured learning environments, visual supports, systematic instruction) to the characteristics of ASD, and (3) implementing interventions for individuals with ASD. At the end of the program, students will be able to: 1. Describe the components of a well structured learning environment for individuals with ASD. 2. Locate and evaluate research related to ASD. 3. Describe the characteristics of ASD and link these to evidence based interventions (including assessments) for individuals with ASD. 4. Implement evidence based interventions with individuals with ASD. Do I have to be a Special Education teacher? No. The ASD certificate program is designed for professionals (special education teachers, general education teachers, school psychologists, speech language pathologists, paraeducators/class support staff) and family members of individuals with ASD who already hold a bachelor degrees in education related fields, this is not a requirement of the program.
